Silicone wristbands have been used for years for many purposes, including support for social causes, fundraising and promotional events. But in 2010, can the common silicone wristbands influence the election of a United States Senator?

Lisa Murkowski certainly believes they can. Murkowski, an incumbent senator from Alaska going into the 2010 elections, lost a Republican primary race to challenger Joe Miller. Murkowski, refusing to give up, ran as an independent write-in candidate. Her campaign used silicone wristbands to advise voters how to fill in the ballot for her, and to show the correct spelling of her name.
