If you’re an animal lover, you will probably find the amount of animal cruelty that exists in today’s world downright depressing. You might hate to going to the circus, knowing that many wild and exotic animals are trained through physically abusive methods that include beating, whipping, and poking the animals with sharp objects to force them to learn their routines. It might break your heart to know that, when not performing, many of the animals are kept chained up in cramped stalls and cages. You might not like the idea of using animals for scientific research. You might refuse to eat meat. You certainly disapprove of the use of fur for fashion purposes, and you don’t find dog or cock fighting to be the least bit entertaining.

If you want to share you passion for animals with your kids, you can find a useful educational tool in your satellite TV. Animal Cops is a family-oriented reality show on the Animal Planet channel that focuses on the efforts of animal welfare units to investigate and rescue neglected, abused, and abandoned animals. It began in 2002 and followed the cases of four animal cruelty investigators. The show can be graphic at times, especially if you’re watching in HD, and covers some topics that can be difficult for young kids to handle, like euthanasia (although the procedure itself isn’t shown), and the show comes with a parental discretion advisory. The show has been praised for raising awareness about the mistreatment of animals and was recognized at the 2003 Genesis Awards, which is an awards show sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States that highlights media contributions to animal rights causes around the globe.

Though parts of the show may be disturbing, episodes always include some happy endings, with compassionate people setting positive examples by caring for the abused animals. Loyal followers of the show are relieved to see many of the animals on the road to recovery, and their abusers penalized or behind bars. It’s a good way to approach difficult topics, like what it means to put and animal “to sleep,” and open up a dialogue with your children about the importance of taking good care of pets and the consequences of neglecting them. You can also teach your kids how to be responsible citizens by discussing what to do when they witness an animal suffering. Talk about how to report such cases and who to contact in your area. Maybe your children will be inspired to volunteer at a shelter.

Get the feeling of being face-to-face with your favorite animals by watching Animal Planet, rather than taking your kids to the zoo, where animals are confined in upsetting conditions. Along the same lines as Animal Cops, Animal Precinct shows agents fighting crimes against animals in New York City. Pet owners might also enjoy World’s Ugliest Dog, which tells the beautiful stories of ugly animals, and SuperFetch, which shows non-abusive ways to teach pets amazing tricks. Many shows are available in high-definition, which gives a realistic quality to the images on your screen.

Like any good parent, we all want to provide our children with the best, especially when it comes to education and providing enriching experiences that will help our kids to learn and grow to their full potential. We all know a child’s early years are the most important in terms of development, both socially and intellectually. For this reason, many people have become inclined to make television off limits and, often times, rightfully so. These days, there are numerous programs broadcasted every day that are completely unsuitable for children in addition to the wide expanse of “junk” programming roaming the airwaves, completely lacking in any educational or social value. In an attempt to prevent children from viewing violent or inappropriate content, many families have chosen to abandon the television altogether, in the hopes of avoiding the negative effects and inappropriate exposure the “boob tube” can often transmit.

But you don’t have to be so quick to dismiss television altogether; in fact, it can be a useful educational tool. By carefully selecting which programs you allow your family to watch in addition to monitoring their viewing time, you can start to consider the television as your ally, not the enemy. One of the best ways to provide your family with the best in quality, educational programming is to sign up for a satellite TV service. With customized packages and affordable family plans, you are sure to find the perfect solution for your family and unlock the entertainment potential to be found right in your very own living room.

Most satellite providers offer a wide array of packages and combinations of premium channels to satisfy nearly every interest, from sports fans to movie lovers and even international channels for speakers of other languages. In fact, many packages include a bit of everything, as well as all your standard local channels. Family plans are also offered which provide high-quality entertainment and interesting programming for all ages. In addition to children-based networks that mainly feature cartoons and other “kids’ stuff”, you will also find a wide variety of shows that you can enjoy as well, giving your family the opportunity to spend quality time together, any day of the week.

With so many great channels and programs to choose from, you might find the hardest decision is agreeing on what to watch. Satellite TV offers the best in family programming from popular networks such as Nickelodeon, The Disney Channel, National Geographic and many more. Open your child’s mind to the wonders of science and technology with The Science Channel and NASA-TV or take journeys to distant lands with the Travel Channel, all in the comfort of your own home. Even get the whole family involved with preparing a special dish you all learn how to cook together while watching The Food Network. The opportunities for enjoyable education are nearly endless with satellite service and are available to you at anytime with just a click of the remote.

Making Television an Educational Tool With Satellite TV

When many of us arrive home at the end of a long day, it’s hard to resist the temptation to collapse on the couch in front of the TV and zone out for a while. Many of us probably wish we spent more of our time reading, but oftentimes we are too exhausted to do anything other than stare at a screen.

The good news, however, is that watching the television doesn’t necessarily have to involve subjecting your brain to relatively mindless, albeit entertaining, prime-time programs. Watching television can be as educational as you want it to be-and if you happen to have satellite TV, the opportunities for learning are nearly endless.

If you are interested in science and nature, for example, you may want to flip to the Science Channel or the Discovery Channel. National Geographic has a number of shows relating to animals, nature, and science as well, in addition to its wide selection of programs about the environment, travel, culture, history, and much more.

Planet Green is a new channel devoted to educating viewers about going green and helping the environment. These channels are particularly stunning to watch in high definition! Science and nature are truly brought to life with the incredibly sharp and vivid images of HD television.

Those interested in history can tune in to the History Channel or the Biography Channel for movies and documentaries that recount the stories of great historical events and influential figures of the past. This is a great way to fill in all of those knowledge gaps from when you were zoning out in high school history class. If you’re looking to brush up on a foreign language, be it Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or one of several other options, there are plenty of opportunities to do so with international programming.

Movies, sports, news, and music are available from countries on four continents around the world.

One other simple way to make your television-watching experience a bit more productive is simply to watch the news. There are of course various news channels and programs to choose from, and you may wish to switch between several of them in order to stay informed; this will give you a wider range of coverage and viewpoints. With satellite TV, your programming package most likely includes the option to select up to 60 satellite radio stations as well, many of which feature news programs. Keeping up with current events is always interesting and will prepare you for political, economic, and cultural discussions with friends and colleagues.

If you want to make your down time a bit more productive, you really have many options with the right TV programming package. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with occasionally indulging in your favorite TV drama or the sports highlights. If, however, you’re looking to make television watching a lot less mind-numbing and far more educational, you can! Whether it’s science, history, or current events you’re after, you will easily find what you’re looking for with the hundreds of channels and wide range of options available to you.
