How to Clean Combs and Brushes

Keeping your combs and brushes clean is a must for keeping your hair clean and healthy.  There are a couple of different ways you can do this – the boiling water method and the baking soda method.
Boiling Water Method

Remove all the hair from your brushes.  You can do this by holding them under running water and using a comb to comb the hair out.
Boil about 4 cups of water.
Pour the boiling water into a large bowl.
Add about 1/2 tsp. of detergent or bleach and stir.
Put your combs and brushes into the water and let them sit for about an hour.
Take them out and lay them on a towel to air-dry.
Baking Soda Method

Remove all the hair from your brushes.  You can do this by holding them under running water and using a comb to comb the hair out.
Find a tall, narrow container (such as a tall drinking glass or vase) that will hold all the combs and brushes you wish to clean.
Fill the container 3/4 full with hot tap water (so the baking soda will dissolve).
Add 1 tsp. of baking soda to the water and gently stir.
Put your combs and brushes into the water and let them sit for at least an hour.
Take them out and lay them on a towel to air-dry.
Removing Buildup
If you are a gel, mousse, or hairspray user, you will have a buildup on your combs/brushes.  If you have buildup on your comb, you’ll notice a fuzzy looking coating on them when you remove them from the baking soda water or the detergent water.

Since you have already soaked the combs for an hour in either baking soda or detergent water, the buildup can be gently wiped off with the bristles of an old toothbrush under running water.  The bristles can get into the tiny spaces of a comb and clean it properly.
Give your combs one final rinse under running water to make sure all the buildup is removed.
Place them on a towel to air-dry.
